Citadel of Sisteron
Presentation
On the border of the "Dauphiné" and Provence, with its bastions, its outer walls, its keep, the Citadel dominate the town of Sisteron.
Henri IV used to say "It is the most powerful fortress of my kingdom".
Clinging to a rocky spur above the Durance, between Provence and Dauphiné, the impressive profil of the citadel can be seen in the sky of Sisteron. A jewel of the town's architectural and historical heritage, of which it is the symbol, this fortress is a collection of works from different periods, from the 13th century for the upper rampart and the parapet walk to the 19th century for the major alterations made to the north face.
A visit to the fortress is full of surprises, such as the dungeon occupied by Prince John Casimir of Poland in 1639, or the incredible staircase carved into the rock and leading directly to the northern gate of the city. The restoration and enhancement of the site, carried out by the association "Arts, Theatre, Monuments" (ATM), have been particularly successful and the visit offers, in addition to a breathtaking view of Sisteron and the Durance, a great moment of culture and history. The site is enhanced by a sound track accompanying the visitor, but also by a museum with a room dedicated to Napoleon's visit, a film "Citadelle, ship of men..." and an exhibition on "Vauban and his predecessors".
En raison des nombreuses marches tout au long de la visite, l’accès en poussette peut s’avérer difficile, nous vous conseillons de vous munir d’un porte-bébé.
