Situated on the left bank of the River Vançon, Saint Symphorien is ochre in colour, reflecting the sandstone in the surrounding area.
The mediaeval village protected access to the valley. In the late Middle Ages, the area emptied for a century. It was repopulated around 1560 by families from other regions.
